The sun rose on a new season for Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Sunrise on Monday.

The ship arrived in Fort Lauderdale for the winter and left later that afternoon for a cruise to Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman.

Earlier this year, Carnival Sunrise, previously known as Carnival Triumph, emerged from renovations fully transformed.

The ship, which is around two decades old, was remodeled to the point that it was “unrecognizable,” Vance Gullisken, news desk senior manager for Carnival Cruise Line, told USA TODAY.

The changes were so extensive, the ship had to be renamed.

The renovations cost around $200 million. That’s “not just a replaced carpet or new chairs,” Gullisken said. While that’s a high number, it is more cost effective than building a new ship, he added.

Some of the new features include:

  • Casual food and beverage options.
  • A new water park.
  • Theater and other live entertainment.
  • Updates to state rooms and two redesigned Captain’s suites.

The cruise that left Monday was sold out, according to Carnival. It is the first of almost 40 that will leave from Fort Lauderdale in the winter season, which concludes on May 2.

Its Fort Lauderdale lineup includes four- and five-day cruises.

“We are pleased to bring Carnival Sunrise to Port Everglades, providing our guests with more options in sailing from South Florida,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.
