Coney Island Amusement Park in Cincinnati will shut down all its rides

Coney Island Amusement Park plans to focus all its attention on its water park area and shut down all its amusement park rides by the end of this month, park operators announced Monday.

The final day for guests to ride the Cincinnati, Ohio, park’s rides will be Sept. 21 at the annual “Fire Up the Night” event, according to a press release.

Coney Island will center its attention and efforts on new water park features and amenities in the Sunlite Water Adventure area.

Dividing resources between its rides area and the water park limited the number of man-hours and dollars that could be invested in either area.

Feedback from visitors indicated most came for the water park experience, according to Rob Schutter Jr., Coney Island’s president and CEO.

“All of our consumer research, all of our consumer feedback, and all of our in-park data shows that the vast majority of our guests come to Coney Island because of the fun they have while in the Sunlite Pool area,” Schutter said.

Work on the water park has already begun and will culminate with a 100th birthday celebration for the Sunlite Pool in 2025.

“Since 2016, we’ve invested more than $6 million into the Sunlite Pool,” Schutter said. “We will kick-start a new multi-phase renovation to grow Coney Island into the region’s premier swim and play destination.”

In addition to expanding and enchancing the water park, Coney Island plans to create additional spaces for its most popular events, including the Appalachian Festival and Summerfair Cincinnati, and it will carve out new spaces to host new events, community festivals, and group outings.

Our history: The last time Coney Island got rid of its rides, they went to Kings Island in 1972
