Game of Thrones creator unloads on Giants for Odell Beckham Jr. trade

SportsPulse: Move over Tom Brady, the Cleveland Browns are set to be next great team in NFL says USA TODAY’s Trysta Krick. Yes, those Browns. Here’s why.

Winter is apparently coming for the New York Giants.

Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin is not pleased with Big Blue’s decision to trade Odell Beckham Jr., and he expressed his frustration over the transaction on his blog in the aftermath of the stunning deal.

His prediction: a Big Blue Wedding.

“I thought the last two seasons were rough for Giants fans. Next year is going to make them look like the good old days,” Martin wrote. “Someone pinch me. I am having a Big Blue nightmare.”

A native of Bayonne, Martin has been rooting for the Giants since 1958, and he even mentioned the NFL Championship Game from that season — widely recognized as “The Greatest Game Ever Played” — in which the Colts beat the Giants, 23-17, at the old Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

Martin has put NFL references into the HBO program Game of Thrones – based on his novels – including a tip of the cap to Giants legend and Super Bowl champion Phil Simms, naming a character (Wun Wun) as a tribute to No. 11.

“Beckham was not only the best receiver on today’s Giants, but he was the best receiver this storied NFL franchise has EVER had in their long history, and probably the best receiver they will ever have,” Martin added. “They are certainly not going to replace him with the 17th overall pick in the forthcoming draft.”

Beckham posted a farewell on Instagram early Thursday morning in which he said his good-byes to the Giants, their fans and the city.

“So many mixed emotions and feelings. This is all, a lot to process but it is reality,” Beckham wrote. “I don’t kno exactly what to say so just gotta keep it real and short. I want to thank the NY giants organization for giving me an opportunity to do what God put me on this earth to do, I want to thank the organization and the owners for everything and especially giving me my first chance to be a part of the NFL.
