Intoxicated man jumped on train, tried to pull brake

A California man was arrested after he tried to place an Amtrak train in “emergency stop mode” while intoxicated.

Around 1 a.m. Monday morning , Dylan Thomas Baldini, of McCloud, allegedly jumped on the back-up engine of the train while under the influence and reportedly tried adjusting train-related control devices – and even activated the train whistle multiple times.

An Amtrak spokeswoman confirmed the incident to USA TODAY in a statement: “Amtrak Coast Starlight train 11 was traveling from Seattle to Los Angeles when a trespasser entered the cab of a trailing unit that was stopped for a freight train. The trespasser climbed onto the trail end unit while the train was stopped. There was no access to the locomotive powering the train.”

He was later arrested for being under the influence in public, trespassing, and interfering and hindering the safe and efficient operation of a train, according to a Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office press release. A local hospital examined him.

At the time of the incident, “the man was reportedly under the influence, was exhibiting hostility, and was not wearing a shirt,” the press release stated.

“We are grateful the prompt response from (Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office), (Mt. Shasta Police Department), and (California Highway Patrol) helped to mitigate what could have been a very dangerous outcome on a moving train, which obviously involved actions that potentially jeopardized the safety of passengers, crew, and others in the community,” Sheriff Jon Lopey said in a statement.

“This case is still under investigation and anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office 24-hour Dispatch Center at 530-841-2900,” he added.
